This weekend’s adventures took place in the old part of Bangkok. So far, our life has taken place in one of the business districts of town. Every morning, I leave the apartment, get on the underground, get off at my office, work the day and come home and on the way, I see just about nothing extraordinary, except stray dogs everywhere. That’s the way it is in this part of town. The only fun or exciting things in this part of town are big shopping centers. So, in search of adventure, we ventured toward the muddy old river and a giant reclining buddha.
We started out our day by going to the Grand Palace.
In the old part of town, most of the sights are along the river, so you can bounce around to most of them via river taxis. So from the palace, we crossed the river to see an older wat called Wat Arun. It was not as old as the ruins that we saw last weekend, but not as new as the wats in the Grand Palace.
Another river crossing took us Wat Pho and the countries largest buddha in the reclining position.
It was a beautiful place, and there were several other wats in the same complex. For some reason, the day we were there, there were a bunch of young monks on a sort of field trip through the complex. It was really fun to see that they were just like the young scouts that I am used to back home, full of shenanigans.
What a great time!
